Optical phase shifts and diabolic topology in Möbius-type strips
نویسندگان
چکیده
We compute the optical phase shifts between the left and the right-circularly polarized light after it traverses non-planar cyclic paths described by the boundary curves of closed twisted strips. The evolution of the electric field along the curved path of a light ray is described by the Fermi-Walker transport law which is mapped to a Schrödinger equation. The effective quantum Hamiltonian of the system has eigenvalues equal to 0,±κ, where κ is the local curvature of the path. The inflexion points of the twisted strips correspond to the vanishing of the curvature and manifest themselves as the diabolic crossings of the quantum Hamiltonian. For the Möbius loops, the critical width where the diabolic geometry resides also corresponds to the characteristic width where the optical phase shift is minimal. In our detailed study of various twisted strips, this intriguing property singles out the M”obius geometry.

Observation of optical polarization Möbius strips
Möbius strips are three-dimensional geometrical structures, fascinating for their peculiar property of being surfaces with only one “side”—or, more technically, being “nonorientable” surfaces. Despite being easily realized artificially, the spontaneous emergence of these structures in nature is exceedingly rare. Here, we generate Möbius strips of optical polarization by tightly focusing the lig...
متن کاملOptical Möbius Strips in Three Dimensional Ellipse Fields: Lines of Circular Polarization
The major and minor axes of the polarization ellipses that surround singular lines of circular polarization in three dimensional optical ellipse fields are shown to be organized into Möbius strips. These strips can have either one or three half-twists, and can be either right-or left-handed. The normals to the surrounding ellipses generate cone-like structures. Two special projections, one new ...
متن کاملOptical Möbius Strips in Three Dimensional Ellipse Fields: Lines of Linear Polarization
The minor axes of, and the normals to, the polarization ellipses that surround singular lines of linear polarization in three dimensional optical ellipse fields are shown to be organized into Möbius strips and into structures we call “rippled rings” (r-rings). The Möbius strips have two full twists, and can be either rightor left-handed. The major axes of the surrounding ellipses generate cone-...
متن کاملGauge-invariant Geometry of Space Curves: Application to Boundary Curves of Möbius-type Strips
We derive gauge-invariant expressions for the twist Tw and the linking number Lk of a closed space curve, that are independent of the frame used to describe the curve, and hence characterize the intrinsic geometry of the curve. We are thus led to a frame-independent version of the CălugăreanuWhite-Fuller theorem Lk = Tw + Wr for a curve, where Wr is the writhe of the curve. The gauge-invariant ...
متن کاملA Systematic Method to Analyze Transport Networks: Considering Traffic Shifts
Current network modeling practices usually assess the network performance at specified time interval, i.e. every 5 or 10 years time horizon. Furthermore, they are usually based on partially predictable data, which are being generated through various stochastic procedures. In this research, a new quantitative based methodology which combines combinatorial optimization modeling and transportation...
